What is Toenail Fungus?

If you are asking what is toenail fungus, then you must have an infection or have noticed a change in your toenails. First of all, there are some very obvious symptoms that you either may have or have noticed, including:

*Yellowing toenails, or some other strange discoloration
*Darkness under your toenail (caused by a build up of the crumbling bits from your toenail)
*Redness or infection (in more advanced infections)
*Toenails are brittle, thick or have white edges and appear dull (not shiny as in a healthy nail)
*Foul odor emanating from your toes;
*Pus coming from under the nails (very serious) if you have a fever, go immediately to your local emergency room

Toenail fungus is caused by the same sort of fungus that causes athelete’s foot. It is generally spread through your foot coming into contact with a surface where the fungus was deposited by someone who is infected. This could be at a local pool or gym or even a hotel room where people who are infected may go barefoot. It is always advisable to wear flip flops or sandals when you are walking around with no socks or shoes on; not coming into direct contact with these kinds of surfaces is the best way to prevent the fungal infection. Always wash and dry your feet thoroughly if you suspect you have been unnecessarily exposed.

It is not something we all think about, but toenail fungus is everywhere. Preventing the contraction of this fungus is the first step; however, if you have been exposed, disinfecting and treating the fungus is your next logical step.

What is toenail fungus? It is a slow growing, difficult to eradicate fungus that can take over your nails without you even noticing until it is a well established problem. Take action the moment that you notice you are affected by the problem, or you will notice your symptoms growing progressively worse over time.
